Literacy Memoir
The literacy relationship
that has made the largest impact on my literacy identity is my mother. My
mother made sure that all of our experiences had educational value and she made
sure that we learned through exploration and discovery. My earliest memories
are of my mother reading to me, taking me to museums,
and to the zoo. We always had books in our home and my mother
encouraged us to write our thoughts and create our own stories. One of my
fondest memories is that of my mother taking my brother
and me to the University of Houston to register for her classes. I
enjoyed the collegiate atmosphere and loved going to campus with her to
study or to attend classes. My mother always encouraged me to go beyond
my own expectations and to experience life in the fullest. She encouraged
me to try new things and to create new memories. I believe that the larger message of my
upbringing and how it relates to my educational beliefs is that I follow the constructivist theory of learning. I believe that children learn through hands-on experiences and they learn by doing.
I believe that all people deserve respect and should be encouraged to
understand and love their uniqueness,
backgrounds, and cultures. I think that
by allowing students to build on what they know by creating new thoughts and
ideas and by discovering their own way is an ideal learning situation.
